CITES in New Zealand

The New Zealand legislation implementing CITES is the Trade in Endangered Species Act 1989. The operation and administration of CITES is provided by the Department of Conservation.

In order to implement CITES, DOC has established a CITES Management Authority and a CITES Scientific Authority. The Management Authority issues permits, coordinates with the CITES Secretariat in Geneva, produces annual trade reports, and promotes awareness of CITES in New Zealand.

The Scientific Authority provides guidance on the biological status of species and required care conditions of live species that are imported, facilities for captive-breeding, and limits to export of specimens.

The New Zealand Customs Service and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry are responsible for border controls.
