Managing recreation opportunities
Recreation and historic participation tools
To encourage more people to participate in outdoor recreation and to protect and bring to life our historic heritage DOC is developing a set of tools and standards called the "Destination Management Framework" (or DMF).
DMF will provide a transparent framework to guide the way that DOC will manage recreation and historic opportunities.

The tools and standards will enable DOC to set clearer priorities, and to monitor and report on the effectiveness of the recreation and historic heritage work.
The priorities will be based on a greater understanding of our customers, and this will help us work with others to provide a range of opportunities that more people will value.
Collaboration
DOC is a significant provider of recreation opportunities to New Zealanders and international visitors.
We understand that we must work with others - community, iwi, business and local government - to encourage more people to participate in outdoor recreation.
Communities and businesses are involved with us in the provision of recreation, tourism and historic opportunities. We seek to work more effectively to deliver opportunities that meet the range of community and business aspirations, and that encourage more people to participate in outdoor recreation.
Conversations about conservation priorities

DOC will provide information to support the conversations with communities, iwi and business about how we can more effectively manage the wide range of recreation and heritage destinations and assets.
These conversations will help identify what is valued at local places, how these places fit into a national context and what aspirations the community, iwi and business have for local places.
This information will be captured in the conservation management strategies (CMS) being developed by Conservancies over 2011 and 2012.
