The Nelson Marlborough Conservancy looks after 52% of the Nelson and Marlborough regions on behalf of the public. This includes Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and Nelson Lakes National Parks, Mt Richmond Forest Park, Stephens Island and Farewell Spit Nature Reserves, offshore islands and wetlands.
The Marlborough Sounds and the Kaikoura Mountains also offer many opportunities for recreation on public conservation land. There are three small marine reserves in the conservancy Long Island, West Haven and Tonga Island.
For management purposes, the conservancy is divided into five areas, each with its own office and staff. The conservancy headquarters is in Nelson.
