Other protected marine areas
The New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy, launched by the Government in 2000, has a range of actions to improve how we protect our marine biodiversity.
One of its goals is to develop a representative network of marine protected areas. Through this network, the strategy wants to ensure a full range of the habitats and ecosystems that represent our native marine biodiversity is protected and maintained in a healthy functioning state.
Building a network that truly represents the range of marine biodiversity, habitats and ecosystems in our waters is a real challenge. It will test what we know about marine communities, what they are made up of and how they function.
The Biodiversity Strategy proposes a range of tools to achieve this network.
