Meet a metre online project

Finalist in the Stockholm Challenge

Meet a Metre has the huge honour of being shortlisted as the sole New Zealand finalist in the prestigious 2010 Stockholm Challenge Awards in the education category.

The Stockholm Challenge is a pioneer among ICT awards and networking organisations. In 1994 it launched the first competition to challenge the cities in Europe to show their best ICT applications for people and society.

The overall goal of the Stockholm Challenge is to help counteract social and economic disadvantage, wherever it occurs, by promoting the use of ICT for development.

About Meet a Metre

The Meet a Metre interactive online project was run in Term 1, 2010 and will be offered again in Term 2, 2012. It is suitable for year 1-10 students throughout New Zealand and is hosted by the NZ International Science Festival and the Department of Conservation.

Aim

The aim of Meet a Metre is to promote good science and the New Zealand International Science Festival. The project also gives young scientists a unique chance to connect to DOC scientists.

It also aims to enhance biodiversity/ecology, increase native flora and fauna, reduce exotic flora and fauna and increase public awareness/appreciation of the local natural values.

This is a project that will immerse students in a real and practical opportunity which, while simple, will teach them correct scientific methods and terminology.

The brief

Students will:

  • Audit life forms (flora, fauna, fungi) inside a marked metre of their school grounds
  • Collate and present their findings
  • Formulate a plan to enhance the area
  • Create a new plan in response to feedback given by DOC experts
  • Monitor results and recognise changes over time
