Short awards needed for field based courses

Course requirements

From March 2011 the delivery of DOC's field based courses is changing from single courses to short awards. To gain a short award you need to:

  • Complete a Natural Heritage online course (before attending a field course).
  • Attend a field course.
  • Complete a First Aid in the Outdoors course (within 2 years).

The Natural Heritage short award is the only short award currently available. A Visitor Assets short award will be offered later in 2011.

DOC's field based courses are now run by Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).

To gain this short award you must successfully complete two compulsory courses and one field course:

Compulsory courses:

Field courses (one required):

How long do I have to complete a short award?

You must complete a short award within two years. If it's not completed within this time you will need to re-enrol in the programme and undertake the course a second time.

What if I want to enrol for two field courses?

You will need to enrol for a short award for each field course you attend. However, you can cross-credit the two compulsory courses (Natural Heritage and First Aid in the Outdoors) for more than one short award.

How do I register for a short award?

You can register for any of the field courses using our online form. Once registered you will receive an enrolment form from NMIT.

Registration must be completed at least one month before the course is scheduled to begin. If there aren't enough participants the course may be cancelled.

Register online for field courses.

Will I receive any learning material before the course?

Learning material will be provided to you either online before or on the field course itself. A guide to online learning and information about NMIT will be sent to you when you register.
