Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board
The Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board represents the community interest in the work of the Department of Conservation. The board's area of concern has the same boundaries as DOC's Canterbury Conservancy.
The board has several significant tasks. It monitors the implementation of the Canterbury Conservation Management Strategy which is a blueprint for conservation management within Canterbury. It includes aspects of the Ngāi Tahu Deed of Settlement as a consequence of the Treaty of Waitangi negotiations, as these affect the public conservation estate. The board plays a role in the writing of national park management plans. The current Aoraki Mount Cook National Park Management Plan was published in 2004 and the current Arthur's Pass National Park Management Plan was published in 2007. The Canterbury Conservation Management Strategy and the national park management plans are reviewed every ten years. The board may also authorise other specialist management plans from time to time.
Besides these tasks, the board is involved in many other conservation-related issues.
