Bow and cross bow hunting

Hunting with bows and crossbows is allowed on public conservation lands as long as a hunting permit is obtained and your weapon meets some minimum specifications.

Bow hunting minimum criteria

  • Minimum drawing weight factor 18kg
  • Minimum diameter of two opposing blades is 25mm
  • Minimum diameter of multi-bladed head is 22mm
  • Minimum length of complete arrow is 690mm
  • Minimum weight of complete arrow is 32g
  • Only non-barbed hunting arrows are permissible
  • Arrows with any poison, explosive or other chemical substance on or in the head or shaft are not permitted.

Crossbow minimum criteria

  • Minimum drawing weight factor 68kg
  • Minimum diameter of multi-bladed head is 26mm
  • Minimum length of complete arrow is 500mm
  • Minimum weight of complete arrow is 30g
  • Arrow shaft must rotate in flight
  • Hunting arrows must not be placed into a loaded crossbow under any circumstances unless target is located
  • Only non-barbed hunting arrows are permissible
  • Arrows with any poison, explosive or other chemical substance on or in the head or shaft are not permitted.
