Native species

The Wildlife Act (1953) protects most native species from hunting. However pukeko and some duck species can be hunted at certain times of the year.

Check with the local DOC visitor centre or office.

The maximum penalty for killing such protected wildlife is a $100,000 fine and up to a year in jail. Make sure you are aware of what species are protected to avoid mistakenly hunting these animals.
