There are more than 570 kilometres of walking and tramping tracks in the park. The more popular longer walks include the Heaphy Track (one of New Zealand's Great Walks) and the Wangapeka Track.
Short walks are available at most roadends.
Kahurangi also contains the Tasman Wilderness Area. Vast, untracked and without huts, it is suitable for experienced trampers.
The 78.4 km Heaphy Track is the longest of the DOC Great Walks. Located in Kahurangi National Park, the track crosses expansive tussock downs, lush forests, and stunning coastline. Mountain biking is allowed on a seasonal basis.
This track, in the heart of Kahurangi National Park, gives a true backcountry experience for trampers, hunters and fishers. Mountain biking is allowed from Flora carpark to Barron Flat.
It is a 3 hour walk to Lake Matiri. From there you can do overnight tramps to 1000 Acre Plateau.

It's a 4-6 day moderately difficult tramp along the Wangapeka Track in Kahurangi National Park.
Highlights on the circuit are: beautiful beech forest, dramatic gorge scenery, old gold workings, Lake Stanley with its rock debris dam and the historic pack track section. Mountain biking is allowed from the Uruwhenua Road end to Waingaro Hut.
There are three tracks in Kahurangi where mountain biking is allowed, offering a variety of grades and experiences: Heaphy Track, Anatoki/Waingaro circuit, Flora to Barron Flat (see Mount Arthur Tableland Circuit).

Remote, wild rivers are a feature of Kahurangi. Most are suitable for experienced kayakers only. Commercial rafting tours are available.
The Karamea River is prized internationally for its trout fishing.
Some of the deepest caves in the world have been found in Kahurangi but they are not for the inexperienced.
