Plan & prepare
Getting there
Transport to the island is either a 20-minute flight from Invercargill Airport or a one-hour trip on the ferry from Bluff.
Weather
Trampers need to be prepared for the southern weather which can turn wild, wet and windy any time of year.
A night in any one of the dozen tramping huts on the island is a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Ruru, the native owl and weka provide a chorus on still nights and the not-uncommon violent weather can turn on a dramatic display.
