Activities in Te Urewera National Park

Tracks and walks

The park has an extensive track system but perhaps the best known and the best developed is the Lake Waikaremoana Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Huts are situated along the 46 km track; most can also be accessed by boat. Shorter walks are also available including one up to the idyllic Lake Waikareiti. Take a closer look at Lake Waikareiti by hiring a dinghy from the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre (private craft are not permitted).

There are areas of private Maori land within the park. In most cases you are welcome to pass through but please stay on the marked tracks.

Other activities

Boating and fishing

Water-based activities are popular on Lake Waikaremoana and most craft are permitted. Jet skis, house boats and float planes are NOT permitted.

Brown and rainbow trout are found in Lakes Waikaremoana and Waikareiti. Fishing licenses can be bought from the campground store and kayaks are also available for hire.

Hunting

Introduced animals such as deer and pigs are found in the park and hunting of these animals is encouraged. Hunting is by permit only. For the safety of all users and to assist search and rescue operations, hunters must have a permit issued by DOC.

Obtain a permit from the Department of Conservation
