Kaitaia area

Cape Reinga and Herekino Forest are both found in the Kaitaia area. The Herekino Forest is home to many rare and threatened species, including the North Island brown kiwi, long-tailed bat and kauri snail.

Ahipara

Ahipara features some of New Zealand's most striking coastlines, characterised by the iconic Te Oneroa a Tohe (90 Mile Beach), dune lands, coastal shrublands and historic gumlands.
Location: Ahipara is located 14km west of Kaitaia, at the southern end of Te Oneroa a Tohe (90 Mile Beach).

Doubtless Bay

Visit Doubtless Bay and explore a stunning array of cultural and historical sites, unspoiled coastlines, magnificent pa sites and scenic reserves with stunning views.
Location: Doubtless Bay is a 40 minute drive from Kaitaia on State Highway 10.

Herekino Forest

Herekino Forest is home to many threatened and endangered species. You can explore the forest through a track that makes up part of the Te Araroa Pathway.
Location: Herekino is situated in the Far North, 26 km south-west of Kaitaia.

Kaitaia

Kaitaia is the gateway to the Far North, popular with recreational water sport enthusiasts and trampers. It also offers short walks with fantastic views.
Location: Kaitaia is the last major town as you travel to the top of the North Island, and is the gateway to the Far North.

Karikari Peninsula

Karikari Peninsula is renowned for its amazing white sandy beaches and bays such as popular Maitai Bay. Other attractions include historical Puwheke Beach, Karikari Beach and picturesque Waikato Bay.
Location: Situated to the west of Doubtless Bay, Karikari Peninsula is a long narrow piece of land, lined with idyllic beaches and bays, which reach out into the Pacific Ocean.

Lake Ohia

Lake Ohia is an other-worldly place of charred stumps and gumland scrub that casts a strange sort of magic over you.
Location: Lake Ohia is 21.5 km from Kaitaia.

Raetea Forest

Raetea is a mountainous region of native bush located south of Kaitaia featuring huge towering trees and clear rocky bottom streams.

Te Paki

Te Paki, a unique and dynamic area, is home to a wide range of native plants and animals. The area provides easy access to idyllic campgrounds, great walking tracks and many outdoor recreation opportunities.

Location: Te Paki is located at the northernmost area of New Zealand on the small, narrow Aupouri Peninsula

Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga)

The famous landmark Te Rerenga Wairua sits at the tip of the Te Paki Recreational Reserves. A highly significant area to Maori, it marks the point from which Maori wairua (spirit) return to their traditional homeland.
Alert: Possum control operation
Location: Te Rerenga Wairua represents the top of the North Island. From Kaitaia it is a 1 1/2 hr drive north on State Highway 1.

Te Werahi Wetland

Te Werahi is a large freshwater wetland system, which has three raupō swamps linked by narrow sandy streams. It can be seen from the road to or from Cape Reinga.
Location: Te Werahi is about 4.5 km south of Cape Reinga.

Warawara Forest

Warawara is a mountainous forest north of the Hokianga locally known as the 'spirit forest'. Warawara is home to many threatened and endangered species including New Zealand's smallest bird, the rifleman/titipounamu.

Location: Warawara is located south-east of Kaitaia, north of the Hokianga Harbour.
