Northern Kaimai (Karangahake to Wharawhara)
Tui Mine track temporary closure. The Tui Mine Track, leading from Tui Rd at the base of the mountain to the Tui Saddle, is closed due to remediation works at the Tui Mine. Drivers & cyclists are advised to steer clear of Tui Rd leading to the summit, which will be busy with traffic relating to the mine works.
All other Northern Kaimai tracks are open (but see note on Crown Tramway Track below).
On-going vegetation control work will be taking place at Karangahake Gorge and Victoria Battery. Take a torch (especially on Windows Walk) and suitable clothing/footwear. Please report any vandalism or graffiti that you see. Thank you to the Department of Corrections for their on-going assistance at Karangahake Gorge and Victoria Battery.
Crown Tramway Track - occasional closures. The lower part of the Crown Tramway Track between the Karangahake Historic Walkway and the Underground Pump-house will regularly be closed when heavy rainfall events are forecast. These closures are to ensure public safety which could otherwise be compromised by weather induced slips and rock fall which are regular occurrences on this track.
Please note that the Underground Pump-house and Dickey Flat Campsite are still accessible via the Windows Walk when the lower Crown Tramway Track is closed. Please check with the Tauranga Area Office 07-578 7677 in the first instance for the current status, or the DOC HOTline 0800 362 468 at weekends and Public Holidays.

Hauraki Rail Trail - Upcoming Karangahake Gorge Asset Upgrades Over the next 12 months DOC in conjunction with Hauraki District Council plan to be upgrading assets along the Karangahake Historic Walkway from the Karangahake Hall to Waikino. There will be times when tracks will be closed to allow for the physical works to occur. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
Dickey Flat Campsite - Summer of Change. The Dickey Flat Campsite has just come through the first summer as a 'standard' campsite. The campsite underwent changes last year in time for the summer season. The changes were aimed at improving the visitor experience, by limiting unruly behaviour and better maintaining the site, with the introduction of a campsite warden.
DOC would like to thank the campsite wardens for their hard work and efforts over the past five months in making this change over process a success.
Waitawheta Hut. This can get busy on holiday weekends. We recommend taking a fly-sheet in case hut is full, please note charge is now $15.30 per adult/night - 3 tickets, and all other fees remain the same. Vegetation clearing work has taken place on the Waitawheta Tramway Track and at the hut.
Daly's Hut This hut suffers regular vandalism please keep us informed of hut condition. Please note charge is now $5.10 per adult/night - 1 ticket.
