See the Tarawera River disappearing underground at various sites before it re-emerges through the spectacular Tarawera Falls through narrow fissures in a fractured rhyolite lava cliff.

Tarawera Outlet to Humphries Bay

This area was extensively altered by the 1886 Tarawera eruption and the landscape is being slowly regenerated by native plant species.

Te Rereatukahia Loop Track

Grass clearings and an old fence are a legacy of days gone by when this section was highly modified by burning and farming.

Te Tihi o Tawa Trail

Te Tihi o Tawa is a specifically built trail through native bush with great downhills for mountain bikers. It starts from the highest point in Whakarewarewa Forest and links into 'Billy T' half way down.

Alert: Trail is still very new and raw. Please avoid riding in wet conditions or after rainfall.

Te Waihou Walkway

Te Waihou Walkway lies alongside the upper reaches of the Waihou River, where the water is extremely clear and pure, with an intense blue hue.

The North-South Track

This is a multi-day tramp using rugged, unmarked routes. Trampers will need to camp in addition to staying in huts.

Waiorongomai Valley tramping tracks

The history of gold mining in the area has left many pack tracks and tramlines which can now be walked. Choose 1-2 hour walks, or combine them for a full and challenging day's walk.
